GOOD FRIDAY. Government offices in Port Chester, Rye Brook and the Town of Rye are closed today for Good Friday, a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday.

PASSOVER BEGINS AT SUNDOWN. The holiday of Passover (Pesach) is an important and biblically derived holiday that Jews celebrate as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in ancient Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. According to standard biblical chronology, this event would have taken place about 1300 BCE. Passover is observed by avoiding leaven and highlighted by Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs and reading the Haggadah, a Jewish text that sets forth the order of the Passover Seder. Reading the Haggadah at the Seder table is a fulfillment of the mitzvah to each Jew to tell of the Jewish liberation from slavery in Egypt as described in the Book of Exodus in the Torah. Happy Passover to our readers who celebrate this holiday.
