Calendar of Rescheduled, Online and In-person Events

Since many events have been cancelled, postponed or moved online, the following information about organizations we usually list in our calendars is being substituted. With places having reopened, in-person events made a comeback. However, now restrictions are returning as the coronavirus makes a comeback.

In-person events

Passover will begin at sundown Sat., Mar. 27 and will end at sunset Apr. 4. Passover is an important and biblically derived holiday that Jews celebrate in commemoration of the exodus—their liberation by God from slavery in ancient Egypt. Passover is observed by avoiding leavened foods and is highlighted by the seder meals, eating matzoh and bitter herbs, drinking four cups of wine and reading the Haggadah, a Jewish text that tells of the exodus from Egypt—the retelling of which is an obligation to pass on as we celebrate that we were once slaves in Egypt but are now free. Happy Passover to our readers who celebrate this holiday.

The Village of Rye Brook has announced that the new brochure for spring & summer 2021 activities is now available at www.ryebrook.org.

Westchester Medical Center will be conducting COVID-19 testing for residents in Port Chester at the Salvation Army, 36 Bush Ave. Fridays through March, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made in English or Spanish by calling 914/202-4530 or by going to https://www.westchestermedicalcenter.org/news/coronavirus-update-1401.

A mobile food pantry, a partnership with Port Chester Community Gardens, the Port Chester Housing Authority, Ridgeway Alliance Church and Feeding Westchester, will be at the senior housing apartments, 169 Terrace Ave., Port Chester once a month—Fri., Mar. 19, 9:30 a.m., Fri, Apr. 30, 9:30 a.m., Fri., May 21, 9:30 a.m. and Fri., June 18, 9:30 a.m. There will be two lines, one will be for the Port Chester Housing Authority tenants and the 2nd line will be for all other residents. Clay Art Center has resumed its Maker Series. Dates are Fri., Mar. 19, Apr. 2 & 16, 7-9 p.m. Ages 17+. Grab your "plus one" to unplug with mud for a creative night out! Have fun and get messy as they walk you through the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel. Create a unique piece of pottery, then choose a glaze from their studio selection. Ballet des Amériques will present Evenings of Dance in Westchester, a series of performances created by renowned choreographer Carole Alexis. Lasdon Park will hold its First Enchanted Garden Show. Bright colors and mystical creatures will fill the Glass House Conservatory at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial – just in time for spring. The new enchanted garden show will be sure to delight guests of all ages. County Executive George Latimer said: “We had great success with our ‘Autumn Changes’ and ‘Holidays on the Hills’ exhibits last year, and we’re excited to add a spring show to our line-up at Lasdon. This new exhibit will provide families with an exciting outing and horticulture enthusiasts with ideas for their own gardens.”

The inaugural exhibit “The Magic of Spring” features over 200 plant species including Cherry, Lime, Lemon and Grapefruit Trees, Norfolk Island Pines, ferns, pothos, philodendrons, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, pansies and ranunculus. The enchanted garden will be open Fri., Mar. 26-Apr. 4 and Thurs.-Sun., Apr. 8-25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets will be sold exclusively online with scheduled viewing times. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children (free for ages 2 and under) and $7.50 for seniors. Westport Country Playhouse will present Acting for the Camera with Tenisi Davis. SAG-AFTRA and Equity actor Tenisi Davis is your guide to acting in front of the camera. In this new class which runs Saturdays, Apr. 10-May 8 at 10 a.m. Davis will take on 10 high school students to teach the foundations needed for becoming a leading actor. Class sessions are approximately 90 minutes long and are designed to get you industry ready. Katonah Museum of Art is presenting Still/Live Beatrice Scaccia: My Hope Chest, The Rothko Room, Beatrice Scaccia: My Hope Chest and Still Life Studio in the Learning Center thru June 27. Still/Live explores how contemporary artists are reimagining the genre of still life. The artists represented in Still/Live work from within the still life tradition, examining three themes—time, portraiture and trompe l’oeil—with new technologies and from new perspectives. The Rothko Room—experience two masterpieces: Untitled (1969) and Untitled (Still-life with Clock and Vase) (1938/1939) – the second and third in an ongoing series of works by Mark Rothko presented by the KMA. Beatrice Scaccia: My Hope Chest’s exhibition grew from her thoughts about a simple item of furniture: the hope-chest. Used by unmarried women to collect items in anticipation of married life, Scaccia uses the hope chest to explore the social expectations placed upon women. In Still Life Studio learn about what makes a still life and why this genre continues to inspire contemporary artists. Discover an unexpected paper-built still life installation by artist Daniel Gordon. Timed tickets for the Learning Center must be reserved for the same time slot as your main Museum admission. Westchester Children’s Museum has announced that registration is open for their Exploring Play Summer Program for ages 3-5. The Port Chester-Rye Brook Film Club will begin Wed., Apr. 28. The film for the 1st virtual session via Zoom, 7-8:30 p.m. is Princess Mononoke (1997), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Seeking a cure for a deadly curse, Ashitaka stumbles into a bitter conflict. County Legislator Nancy Barr will host a Launch1000 presentation by Deborah Novick, Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Westchester County Office of Economic Development Thurs., Mar. 25 at 10 a.m. In response to the significant disruption this past year due to the pandemic, Westchester County is providing the Launch1000 program to qualified county residents, with the goal of providing entrepreneurial training to 1000 Westchester residents to start a business or develop an income stream for themselves and their families.

Launch1000 is an online, self-paced program which teaches participants to evaluate their idea, test it with potential customers, and see if it seems likely to succeed. Results depend on the participant’s motivation and hard work. As participants progress through the program, additional resources such as mentorship, valuable introductions, and even grants, will be made available. The self-paced program can be completed in 12 to 16 weeks. Participants who have been working on an idea for some time may find they move faster. Those who are just beginning their journey may find it takes them longer to evaluate their idea and move it forward. Axial Theatre has announced the line-up of short plays and monologues for March Madness, an all-virtual seasonal tribute to love and lovers. The 13 original one-acts and monologues, presented as two separate bills of plays, will probe the depths of joy, despair and everything in-between that follows when Cupid’s arrows strike – or miss their mark. The YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester have announced that registration is open for the Racial Equality Workshop that will take place online Tues., Mar. 30, 6-8 p.m. Racial Equity 103. It will guide participants through an experience that highlights decision-making and a commitment to anti-racism within their homes, communities, and/or workplaces. Westport Country Playhouse has been on pause since last March because of the pandemic, but they’ll be up and running in 2021 with the productions originally scheduled for 2020—the groundbreaking musical “Next to Normal”; a new comedy perfect for a post-quarantine world, “Tiny House”; the premiere of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” reimagined by Camille A. Brown; and the seductive drama, “Blues for an Alabama Sky.” New to the schedule is the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning “Doubt: A Parable.” They will be listening to the science and may move the productions outdoors or online. Westport Country Playhouse has launched From Concept to Curtain, a virtual documentary series of 30-minute films offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of putting together a Playhouse production. The premiere episode “In the Heights: Beyond el Barrio” can be viewed on their website, www.westportplayhouse.org and YouTube channel, WestportPlayhouse, free of charge. The documentary explores mounting the Playhouse production through interviews with members of the creative team. The video includes short clips from the production.

The Picture House Education at Home March Film Study will feature Women in Film: The Difficult Kind via Zoom. This film study program for adults honors Women's History Month. The class will be taught by Picture House Marquee Night 2019 Honoree Clara Bingham, a journalist, author, and documentary film producer whose work has focused on social justice and women’s issues.  She will discuss important films, including North Country, and the trail-blazing career of Frances McDormand. The White Plains Public Library has suspended their browsing policy in response to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Westchester County. This means there will be no access to their first floor collections or the Trove. They will continue to offer reference services via phone, text, and email. The White Plains AARP Tax-Aide program at the library will not be able to offer the kind of in-person service taxpayers have become used to for so many years. The primary concerns remain the health and safety of taxpayers and preparers, and the protection of confidential taxpayer information. Instead, AARP will operate a no-contact, electronic service, which involves the transmittal of instructions, forms, permissions, and scans of tax documents using email, and consultations between volunteers and taxpayers via Google Meet, which is similar to Zoom. The Performing Arts Center will offer a virtual watch party of the film adaptation of Rubberband: Gravity of Center, Fri., Mar. 26 at 7 p.m. based on the eponymous stage work by Victor Quijada. Westchester Library System (WLS) has announced a “Virtual Library Events in Westchester” program featuring a complete resource of online programs created by member libraries across Westchester County in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The Rye Brook AJP Senior Center has reopened. The Westchester County Clerk’s Office is now open to the public by appointment. Appointments may be made by phone at 914/995-3080 or online using the office's new appointment scheduling software at https://www.westchesterclerk.com/appointments. When scheduling an appointment online, the customer will select the specific service they require. An appointment will be reserved for the appropriate amount of time for the service needed. For certain services, the scheduling software will request additional information, which will allow staff to prepare documents in advance of the customer's visit, guaranteeing the public's appointments will be as brief as possible. While scheduling appointments, the software will also provide information to the customer so that they know what documents, payments, identification, or other materials are required.

Storm King Art Center, located at 1 Museum Rd., New Windsor, N.Y., has reopened its 500-acre site to the public in an outdoor experience with limited capacity. There will be new outdoor presentations by Kiki Smith and Martha Tuttle. As a condition of entry, visitors will be required to book tickets online for a timed entry in advance of their visit, adhere to physical distancing guidelines while on site, and wear a face covering in areas where physical distancing cannot be maintained. The Museum Store and Outdoor Café will remain temporarily closed and the tram and bike rental will not be available in the first stage of opening. The Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Greenwich has reopened. There are a few changes in the way they are conducting the lessons as well as keeping the studio safe for all students and staff. They will be conducting only private lessons at this time at the studio but continue group classes online. The Hudson River Museum has reopened to the public. Visitors will be able to experience the special exhibitions currently on view: Derrick Adams: Buoyant and Adams’ We Came to Party and Plan; Collection Spotlight: Derrick Adams Selects; Self in the City: Highlights from the Collections of the HRM and Art Bridges; and Frances Hynes: Constellations, as well as the permanent installation The Bookstore by Red Grooms. The Museum Courtyard will be open, and visitors are invited to enjoy the lawn by bringing their own mat or blanket. The reopened Museum will allow guests to experience the HRM while taking measures to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors. Museum hours this summer will be Thurs.–Sun., 12–5 p.m. On Saturday evenings the HRM will be open until 7 p.m. Advanced, timed-entry tickets and reservations will be required. Visitors will be able to choose from various slots per day. Capacity is strictly limited, and visitors must arrive and depart from the Museum within their reserved time slot. The Museum has reduced capacity to 40 visitors per time slot, until further notice. Face masks will be required for visitors older than two years old, and for all staff members. All visitors and staff will also be asked to adhere to social-distancing guidelines and use hand sanitizer upon entry to the Museum. Timed tickets are on sale at hrm.org/visit or call 914/963-4550. Their free Summer Amphitheater series is coming to an end. The performances take place in the outdoor theater adjacent to the Museum and overlooking the Hudson River. For this year’s season, the HRM will present one performance each weekend on Saturday evenings in August and September, with socially distanced seating and a limited capacity of 50 guests at each performance. All performances are free and begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are required through hrm.org/amphitheater.
