Rosh Hashanah, which begins at sundown Friday, Sept. 18, corresponds to the beginning of the Hebrew New Year 5781 with the sounding of the shofar (ram’s horn). The shofar is identified in Jewish tradition with the intended sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham. The 10 Days of Awe begin at this time, when God is revered and celebrated as Creator and Master of the Universe, and individuals are called upon to examine themselves and the state of their spiritual lives.
