Alyssa Casino of Rye Brook was recently awarded Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at Manhattanville College in Purchase. She has been a standout on the court, on the diamond and in the classroom for the Valiant women's volleyball and softball teams. The mathematics and sport studies double major has a 3.92 cumulative GPA with seven straight semesters on the Dean's List and is a Castle Scholar in addition to being a six-time MAC Academic Honor Roll recipient.

The Westchester County Health Department is offering free minnows to residents to keep ornamental ponds from becoming mosquito breeding sites. The 200 pounds of fathead minnows will be distributed Fri., May 8 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sat., May 9 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Residents who want the minnows should bring a bucket or pail to Loop Road, Building #2 at the Westchester County Airport. On May 6, County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced a ban on open fires at all county parks as a result of the increased risk of fire caused by recent dry conditions.

Astorino reminds residents that charcoal and propane fires will only be permitted for cooking in permanently fixed grills in the parks during the ban. No open fires are permitted.

The Parks Department will continue to monitor conditions on a daily basis and will reevaluate the ban if any significant rainfall occurs.

Rye Brook Recreation has announced that tennis permits are needed to play on village courts. Tennis attendants will be located at the tennis courts from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tennis permits can be purchased through Community Pass at the Recreation Department or from a tennis attendant. If paying a tennis attendant, you must bring correct change-they do not make change. Private tennis lessons on village courts are not permitted without permission from the Recreation Superintendent.
