Juneteenth will be observed Mon., June 19. It is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed. It was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Village of Port Chester will be closed as will Port Chester and Blind Brook schools, the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, most banks and the post office—no mail delivery June 19. In Rye Brook there is no change in sanitation collections this week. In Port Chester, Mon. garbage & recycling will be collected Tues.; Tues. collections move to Wed.; Wed-Fri., collections are unchanged. No curbside bulk or green waste June 21.
Rye Brook’s 41st Birthday will be celebrated Sat., June 17, 12-4 p.m. at Crawford Park, 122 N. Ridge St. Rides will include Euro Bungee, Giant Swings, Rock Wall, Obstacle Course, Video Game Truck and Bumper Cars. Food options will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, watermelon, steak & cheese. 3 p.m.: Adult pie eating contest. Life Chain will be held Sun., June 18, 2-3:30 at Gateway Plaza (formerly Kohl’s Shopping Center), Boston Post Road, Port Chester. It is a peaceful, prayerful presence for moms and babies and takes place the 3rd Sunday each month.

Rye Brook Recreation has announced that signups are taking place now for Summer Day Camp for boys and girls entering grades K-6 and Teen Travel Camp for boys and girls entering grades 7-10. Camps run July 3-Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Day Camp fees: $1,150 for 1st child; $900 each additional child. Travel Camp fees: $1,900. Send your child for as many weeks as you would like. Clay Art Center, 40 Beech St., Port Chester will offer weekly themed half & full day Summer Camps for children & teens ages 7-15 June 26-Aug. 18. Campers will be shown a variety of techniques on and off the wheel. Camps for ages 7-11 will focus on handbuilding and sculpture; camps for ages 12-15 will focus on wheel throwing and handbuilding. Sample camps include Wheel and Beyond, Surface Design Time, Candy Crush, Amazing Animals, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Ancient Architects and many more. In the classroom, aspiring young artists will develop their imagination and build confidence while working in the transformational medium of clay.
