Passover, also called Pesach, will begin at sunset Wed., Apr. 5. It is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the exodus from slavery in Egypt. The Passover seder, also known as the feast of unleavened bread, is a ritual that marks the beginning of the holiday that lasts for eight days among many Jews (seven days in Israel) during which no leavened products are eaten. At the seder and for the week of Passover, matzoh is eaten instead of bread. The seder is a ritual that includes reading of the Haggadah which retells the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt from the book of Exodus in the Bible. Jews are commanded to retell this story so it is as if each person has been freed. The seder includes special blessings, drinking of four cups of wine, reciting the 10 plagues, eating a festive meal and singing special songs. Nowadays, in addition to the biblical prohibition of owning leavened foods for the duration of the holiday, the Passover Seder is one of the most widely observed rituals in Judaism. Happy Passover to our readers who celebrate this holiday.
Easter will be observed Sun., Apr. 9. It is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following the crucifixion by the Romans as Calvary in 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and penance. Christians refer to the week before Easter as Holy Week which includes Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and the Last Supper and Good Friday which commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Special Easter services will take place at local churches. Happy Easter to our readers who celebrate this holiday.
