An 18-year-old was arrested after allegedly driving a car through the courtyard of an apartment complex on Sunday, July 28.

Reports of a car accident brought Port Chester police officers to University Place at 3:03 a.m.

An investigation of the area led officers to believe a car had been driven onto the interior lawn of The Arbors at Regent Garden.

Officers concluded the driver then plowed through the white plastic fence before striking a signpost on University Place, according to the police report. Parts of the car, including a side view mirror and a splashguard, were allegedly found at the scene.

According to the police report, a Toyota RAV4 was found at 16 Park Pl., which had sustained damage that seemed to align with the vehicular destruction observed on the scene. Ashley Diaz, a resident of the house, allegedly told officers she had not driven the car that evening and provided a sworn statement.

Later that morning, Diaz turned herself in at the police station, allegedly admitting to officers she had misled them. While taking inventory of the car, officers allegedly observed it to have a missing license plate, tinted windows and a tire with exposed wiring coming from the tread.

She was charged with criminal mischief and providing a false written statement, both misdemeanors. She also received infractions for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, driving on the sidewalk, having non-transparent windows and only displaying one license plate.
