With the fall sports season ending, there are fewer games each week. In the past week, the Blind Brook varsity volleyball team played Valhalla and Westlake, and they unfortunately lost their second game of the season to the Vikings. The Lady Trojans have only lost two games the whole season and both losses were to the strong Valhalla team. Both teams have the same record, but due to the bonus points Blind Brook has secured, they remain in first place in the section.

They played Valhalla on Thursday, Oct. 17 in a highly anticipated game. Blind Brook went into this contest with only one loss, and it was to the mighty Valhalla team. The Trojans and Vikings battled it out for three sets and the game ended in a shutout of Blind Brook, 0-3. Fernanda Julian had 14 assists and 14 digs, Ella Rosenfeld had six kills, Oriah Rosenfeld also had six kills, Tanisha Venkatapur had three kills, and Maria Leyva-Pereyra had 10 digs.

This loss has a big impact on Blind Brook’s outlook for the season because it is likely that the two teams will be placed on opposite sides of the bracket in playoffs meaning that the earliest they could play each other could be in the section finals. There is no doubt that Blind Brook is worried about facing that matchup again because it could prevent them from accomplishing their goal of another section title. However, it will not stop them from getting to that point with the same ferocity they have displayed up to this point.

Their next game was against Westlake on Monday, Oct. 21, another thrilling matchup. They played to five sets as they have done in only the Byram Hills game. The final score was 3-2 Blind Brook. The scores of the sets were 24-26, 25-27, 25-16, 25-14, 19-17. Blind Brook went down in the first two sets, and many were worried that they would concede another loss this week, but they pulled through. Ella Rosenfeld had 18 kills, six blocks and 14 digs, Oriah Rosenfeld had 28 kills and 17 digs, Venkatapur had 10 kills and Julian had 42 assists, six aces and 11 digs.

On another note, Blind Brook’s setter, Fernanda Julian, announced some exciting news this past weekend. She will be continuing her volleyball career at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. Blind Brook has been proud to have her representing the school on the court as she is a strong player and has been a crucial part of the team for the past four years which is clear from the 1,500+ assists she has made on the team, a school record. Blind Brook will be sad to see her go but is proud that she has the opportunity to go on to something bigger. She has worked hard and is so deserving of this opportunity to join a team of talented players from all over the world, from as close as the Bronx to as far as Greece. The team is led by Coach Lindsey Veersma assisted by Allison Regan. They play in the Liberty League against schools like Vassar, Union and Ithaca, the latter which is currently winning the league.

Overall, there were some highs and lows for the Lady Trojans this week, but the whole school is hoping for them to pull through with another section title. While the playoffs were not set as of press time Wednesday and nothing will be official until the Lady Trojans finish all their regular season games, Blind Brook was in first place in the section with 52 points and eight bonus points as of Tuesday. Three other teams have a record of 13-2 which is 52 total points, so the only thing keeping Blind Brook in the top spot is the number of bonus points they have. Valhalla is a close second with just one less bonus point. Blind Brook has secured a spot in the playoffs, but the real challenge will be keeping the number one position with three strong teams so close behind them.

To finish out the regular season, Blind Brook would play two final home games: on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against Pleasantville and on Thursday, Sept. 24 against Rye Neck.
