Rosh Hashana, which corresponds to the year 5785 on the Hebrew calendar, will begin at sundown Wed., Oct. 2. Rosh Hashana, which literally means “head of the year,” begins 10 days of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur. It is the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman according to the Hebrew Bible, as well as the initiation of humanity's role in God's world. Customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram's horn), following the prescription of the Hebrew Bible to "raise a noise," eating symbolic foods, such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year. Rosh Hashana is observed for two days by Orthodox and Conservative congregations and one day by Reform congregations. Area synagogues conduct services with admission by ticket only.
