B.B. volleyball closes out regular season with a bang

The Blind Brook girls’ varsity volleyball team ended their regular season with beaming smiles, and for good reason. They were undefeated in league games 6-0, and they were bringing home a coveted banner to hang in the gym. They had their last home game on Thursday, Oct. 18 against Keio.
Senior captain Julia Short was proud of her team, saying the girls played to their full potential instead of playing down to their opponent’s level like they usually would with a worse team. The Trojans won the game in a quick three sets. “They definitely wanted the win, but not as bad as we did,” said Short. It was a sentimental night for the seniors on the team, as it was their last time playing in the Blind Brook gym.
After that game, they had technically already secured the league title, but their coach didn’t tell them to keep their energy high during their final game. Clearly, it worked. The team won their away contest against their rival, Rye Neck, on Monday, Oct. 21 3-1. The team was mentally well prepared for the game, and despite some issues with communication and some bad passes in the first set, the Trojans played hard and were able to pull it together for a win. This game closed out an undefeated league season for the Trojans, an accomplishment the girls are incredibly proud of. “I really wanted that undefeated league champions banner, and it feels so good,” Short said after Monday’s win.
Unfortunately, despite the euphoria coming off their final league game, the team did face one major setback – one of the senior captains, Alisa Mejia, was hurt during the fourth set. She re-injured her ankle which had kept her out of the first few games of the season. She thinks she will be out for the duration of the postseason. “It’s been really hard because I give everything I have to this team, and not being able to continue into playoffs is going to be really difficult,” Mejia said of the disappointing news. However, she has faith that the younger girls will step up for playoffs and knows that with the potential she sees in her team, they will still go far into sectionals without her.
With Monday’s game, the Trojans close out an incredibly successful regular season, with a 12-6 overall record and a 6-0 league record. They now move on to sectionals, with their first playoff game at home on Friday, Oct. 26 at 4:30 p.m. against Irvington.
