The Westchester County Department of Corrections has partnered with the Legal Aid Society of Westchester County on an innovative program that will work collaboratively with detainees and sentenced persons on discharge planning for a successful reentry. The Legal Aid Society will be able to offer incarcerated clients better access to justice by establishing an office in the Westchester County jail where clients can initiate meetings with attorneys and social work staff to not only discuss their pending matters, but also receive early assistance with re-entry planning.

Ja’Liza Michaux of Port Chester was recently named to the President’s List at the State University of New York at Potsdam. Ja’Liza is majoring in Psychology. To achieve the honor of being on the President’s List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.  

County Executive George Latimer has announced that the County Health Department will offer more free flu vaccines by appointment Tues., Jan. 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Tues., Jan. 21, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the County Clinic, 134 Court St., White Plains.

 Westchester County, along with five of its villages (Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Ossining, Tarrytown and Pelham), one town (Ossining) and two cities (Peekskill and White Plains) have been awarded a $100,000 grant to administer a collaborative working group to complete individual government operations, greenhouse gas inventories and climate action plans that will outline emissions reduction targets, strategies and projects. Westchester County’s project team will include municipal staff and appointed members from its Climate Smart Communities Task Force. Each partner municipality will contribute a similar team, and all want to develop successful climate change mitigation strategies and build community resilience.

The Westchester County Office of Economic Development is seeking applications for the next group of budding entrepreneurs for the County’s Element 46 incubator program. This program provides training, mentoring and free workspace to enable startups to develop their businesses with a network of peers. Entrepreneurs are embedded in an existing start-up community within Westchester. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible to www.element46.org/apply.

The Picture House in Pelham has announced that it is focusing on membership in 2020. The goal of the year-long membership drive is to add new members to the already robust membership program. Purchase College will host the SUNYWide Film Festival Apr. 17-19. The festival is one of the top student film festivals in the Northeast and this will be the first year it will be held at Purchase College. The SWFF is now accepting submissions from all SUNY students, including 2019 graduates. New this year is a competition for screenplays. ArtsWestchester invites residents to create a monumental work of public art. Between now and May textile artist Amanda Browder will design and fabricate “Metropolis Sunrise,” a colorful, quilt-like sculpture with help from the community. Once complete, the sculpture will be draped from the top of ArtsWestchester’s historic 9-story building in downtown White Plains. Come to a public sewing day to help create this work of art. No sewing experience is needed; there is a task for everyone. Senior citizens in the Village of Port Chester who are medically homebound may be eligible for a hot meal to be delivered to their home. Suggested donation is $2 per meal. Meals are delivered Mon.-Fri. For more information, please contact the Port Chester Nutrition Program at 914/939-4975.

The Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library offers free delivery services for homebound residents of the two villages. Volunteers will deliver books and audiovisual materials to people unable to leave their home. For additional information, call the library at 914/939-6710, ext. 110.
