Blind Brook High School students studying engineering recently attended a virtual tour of the Parker Jewish Institute that was intended to bring their classwork to life.
The institute, headquartered in Hyde Park, is a leading provider of short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, and prides itself on teaching and geriatric research. The renowned nursing facility features its own medical department and provides community-based health care.
While virtually touring the “state of the art” facility, students visited the industrial-grade boilers, electrical grid and air filtration system while learning how the institute generates its own electricity.
“It was a really wonderful behind the scenes view of facility management,” said Thomas Glickman, a Blind Brook High School science and engineering teacher. Students were reportedly engaged by the presentation.
Led by Parker Jewish Institute leadership, the tour provided detailed explanations of how each piece of machinery operates and what its purpose is for enabling the nursing facility to care for residents and patients.
“The Blind Brook High School students were terrific and very engaged throughout the tour,” said President and CEO Michael Rosenblut. “They are our future workforce and we were happy to offer them this inside look at facilities management and provide real-time insights into the importance of engineering.”
