Superintendent Kliszus to retire in July 2021

Dr. Edward Kliszus has officially declared an end date with the Port Chester School District.

The superintendent, who is about to enter his 10th year as top administrator, submitted his retirement resignation with the Board of Education on Wednesday, May 6. Giving the school board plenty of warning, his last day will be June 30, 2021.

With an extensive background in music—as a teacher and an academic—Kliszus came to the Port Chester School District in 2011 after serving as superintendent in several New Jersey districts for a few years each.

“This was always part of the plan,” Kliszus said. It’s no surprise the superintendent is retiring—over the years he has referenced a few times that the 2020-21 school year would be his last in Port Chester.

The notice given more than a year in advance was a courtesy, Kliszus said. He wanted to give the Board of Education ample time to find a replacement. Especially if they are considering a national search, which Kliszus said is common, it will take months of searching and interviewing to find the right replacement.

“I wanted to give them at least a year’s notice because they have a lot going on. It’s chaotic; it’s a lot,” he said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I care about the future of the district, and they need to have time to go through the whole process. I don’t want them to be rushed; it’s better to have more time.”
