Friends of Crawford Park seek help for June 5 memorial garden planting

The Friends of Crawford Park are breaking ground on a new garden with a sentimental purpose on Saturday, June 5, and the organization’s president Laura Klein is seeking volunteers to partake in the endeavor.
The garden will be in memory of George Hogben, the former Crawford Park caretaker who lived on the premises in the carriage house for a decade. He died at 53 years old on Feb. 11 this year.
“There is a hole in our collective hearts now that our dear friend George is gone,” the Friends wrote in a newsletter about the new garden. “And we are attempting to fill the hole with a beautiful, native woodland garden that will become a living legacy to him as well as a beneficial habitat for local wildlife.”
The garden will include over 1,000 native plants and a cedar chip path that leads to a bench, creating a serene space where visitors can sit and enjoy nature.
“This is just a groundbreaking for the first day of work for the garden, because we’re not going to be able to get it all finished in one day,” Klein said. “The bench and more plants aren’t coming until July. Then we have a piece of art we’ll be installing. Hopefully, though, when it’s all done, it’s going to turn out to be quite special.”
Volunteers are invited to bring gloves and shovels to Crawford Park between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. this Saturday to help bring the project to fruition. The garden will be located on the Talcott Woods side of the park, toward the Lincoln Avenue exit. Signs will be posted to direct volunteers to the site.
