Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, begins at sundown Sun., Nov. 28. It is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE when there was one cruse of oil that contained sufficient oil for one day's lighting only, yet a miracle was wrought, and the lamp burned for eight days. Thus Hanukkah is celebrated for eight nights and days and is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah. Each night, one additional candle is lit until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival. Other Hanukkah customs include singing Hanukkah songs, playing the game of dreidel and eating oil-based foods, such as latkes and doughnuts and dairy foods. Children are generally given a gift each night which may include gelt (money). Happy Hanukkah to our readers who celebrate this holiday.
