Indigenous Peoples' Day/Columbus Day will be celebrated Mon., Oct. 11. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. It was instituted in Berkeley, Calif. in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas Oct. 12, 1492. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook will be closed as will the library, most banks, Port Chester and Blind Brook schools and the post office—there will be no mail delivery. In Port Chester, there will be no change in the sanitation schedule this week. In Rye Brook, Mon. garbage will be collected Tues., Tues. garbage will be collected Wed., Wed., Thurs. & Fri. garbage, recycling and bulk collections remain the same. No green waste collection this week. During holiday weeks, trucks often pick up at very different times and often earlier than normal. The Village Code requires that refuse be out by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day.
The Port Chester Mobile Food Pantry will distribute free food for those in need at Drew Gardens, 10-22 Drew St., Port Chester Sat., Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. Everyone must bring their own reusable bag. CDC guidelines will be followed to ensure community safety.
The Italian flag will be raised by the Port Chester DPW in Liberty Square Friday, Oct. 8 at 9:30 a.m. in honor of Italian Heritage Month and will be up for the month of October. At 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, the Port Chester Italian Heritage Club and the Knights of Columbus will be celebrating their Italian heritage with music, coffee and cannoli at the KOC Hall on Westchester Avenue.
Meals on Main Street (MOMS), also known as Caritas, and the Colony Grill will host the inaugural Miles for MOMS, a 1.5-mile fun run, Sun., Oct. 17. Runners will start at Walgreens (107 N. Main St.), run to the MOMS' building (509 N. Main St.) and back to the Colony Grill parking lot where there will be food, drinks and music to celebrate at the finish line. Rain or shine. BBHS Class of 2025 will have a fundraiser Mon., Oct. 18 at Chipotle, 100 S. Ridge St., Rye Brook, 4-8 p.m. Mention the Blind Brook Freshman Class when you order and 33% of the proceeds will be donated to the Class of 2025.
