In the Mar. 25 edition of this newspaper, the following quote by the Port Chester School District Assistant Superintendent for Business Phil Silano was published in the article “New positions, projects & program boosts promised in 2022-23 budget proposal.”
“Our current year tax levy is $69.8 million,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business Phil Silano. “When we look at the tax cap calculation, we can grow our tax levy to $74.4 million, or an increase of $4.6 million. The superintendent and the Board of Education have made the decision to freeze the tax levy at the current amount of $69.8 million.”
While these were the numbers vocally discussed by district administration at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Mar. 21, it was recently brought to this newspaper’s attention that the figures shared that night were incorrect.
In reality, the tax cap indicates that the Port Chester School District is able to increase its tax levy to $72.6 million, a $2.8 million hike. Though, at this point, the district does not plan to utilize that allowable increase and has suggested plans to freeze the tax levy at $69.8 million.
The correct tax levy numbers were also reported in the Westmore News’s initial coverage of the 2022-23 budget proposal published in the Feb. 25 edition.
