An AIA Lecture - Repatriation: The Arc of Restorative Justice at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science will be presented Sun., Apr. 10, 2-3:15 p.m. This is a free virtual lecture with Steve Nash doing a live Scientists in Action broadcast from Mug House Mesa Verde to schoolkids The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 outlines a legal process by which federally recognize Native American tribes could reclaim their ancestors, sacred objects, and communally-owned objects from museums. At that time, many museum employees, bioarchaeologists, and archaeologists were afraid that NAGPRA constituted an existential threat to museums. In the three decades since, NAGPRA has been slow to take hold (for a variety of reasons) and only about 30% of the Native American ancestors have been repatriated. This lecture examples the repatriation movement in archaeology with a specific emphasis on the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which is a recognized world leader in these efforts. The descendant of the vibrant, matrilineal Asanti people of the West African Gold Coast, Tubman was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland but refused to spend her life in bondage. While still a young woman she embarked on a perilous journey of self-liberation—and then, having won her own freedom, she returned again and again to liberate much beloved family and friends, tapping into the Underground Railroad. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) has launched a mobile app for smart devices to provide visitors and prospective visitors useful information about the variety of destinations and activities available throughout the Empire State’s parks and historic sites. The New York State Parks Explorer App is a free, user-friendly resource for visitors to plan outdoor adventures while staying connected to long-time favorite parks and sites. Users can learn more about top destinations and discover new must-see locations with rotating curated content, and will enjoy quick access to park information, including directions, hours, amenities, fees and rates, trail maps, helpful know-before-you-go details, and the ability to receive important updates and alerts.

Westchester Library System (WLS) has announced a “Virtual Library Events in Westchester” program featuring a complete resource of online programs created by member libraries across Westchester County in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The combined calendar located at burbio.westchesterlibraries.org features dozens of events a week hosted across WLS member libraries and highlights a variety of activities. Children’s programming examples include “Doodlers Online” (Katonah) and “Virtual Sing Along with the Librarians” (Greenburgh); Teen programming such as “Dungeons and Dragons” (Yonkers), adult programming like “A Skeptic’s Guide to American History” (Larchmont), family entertainment such as “Neighborhood Game Night” (Rye) and “Online Senior Fitness” (Pound Ridge).
