The Trojans are back on the basketball court and getting ready for a big season ahead. Following an impressive 11-9 2021-22 season that ended in a hard-fought first round playoff loss, the team looks to make a deeper run this year.
The team will be coached by Eric Brand, Jacklyn Reynolds, Missie Motz and Fernando Olivencia and the captains are senior Daniel Karetsky and junior Eli Zimmerman. The team will need these leaders and fellow seniors to fill big shoes as they lost quite a bit of leadership and star power to the graduating class. The seniors for this season's team are Karetsky, JP D’Inverno, Bryce Oling, Gavin Roy and Ethan Taerstein. These five will need to be leaders both on and off the court for the team to have major success.
Before the season started, the boys had two scrimmages, one versus Eastchester and Henry Hudson and the second against Sacred Heart and Yonkers. As the scrimmages were for practice, the Trojans got an early taste of what they will look like for the season. In the scrimmages the team saw high levels of success on both sides of the ball. On offense Zimmerman and Roy were great shooters while Karetsky ran the offense from the point guard position. On the defensive side sophomore Noah Brookman and senior Taerstein were locked down. The team looked very well-rounded and showed great success in all aspects of the game. The youth of the team even looked good as freshman Tyler Taerstein and sophomore Bailey Estep got off to a great start for the Trojans. The scrimmages displayed a trailer of what this top-notch team will look like all season long.
Both captains are optimistic about the upcoming season. “We are a very young team, but we look to play fast,” said Karetsky. “I saw a lot of good out of the boys this past weekend and can't wait to hit the court with them soon.”
“We have a really great group this year and I'm looking forward to getting to work and having a great season,” said Zimmerman.
The Trojans looked to continue their high intensity play with another week of practice before the season starts Monday, Dec. 5. They will travel to Haldane for a big season opener at 6:15 p.m. This first game will be a great test for the Trojans and indicate what they really bring to the table.
The section should be on watch for these Trojans every time they touch the court.
