Hanukkah will begin at sundown Sun., Dec. 18. This Jewish festival commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire. The Maccabees successfully revolted against Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Temple was purified and the wicks of the menorah miraculously burned for eight days, even though there was only enough oil for one day. The holiday is observed by lighting candles on a hanukkiah (menorah) each night for eight nights, singing special songs, eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts, playing the dreidel game, exchanging gifts and giving Hanukkah gelt (money). Happy Hanukkah to our readers who celebrate this holiday.
