Passover, also called Pesach, will begin at sundown Fri., Apr. 15. It is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, which occurs on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan, the first month of Aviv, or spring. The Passover Seder is a ritual feast that marks the beginning of the holiday which lasts for seven days in Israel and eight days outside Israel. Jews generally observe one or two seders: in Israel, one seder is observed on the first night of Passover. The Seder, the feast of unleavened bread where matzoh is eaten instead of bread, is a ritual performed by a community or by multiple generations of a family, involving a retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt which is in the Book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible. The Seder itself is based on the Biblical verse commanding Jews to retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt: "You shall tell your child on that day, saying, “It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.” Traditionally, families and friends gather in the evening to read the text of the Haggadah which contains the narrative of the Israelite exodus from Egypt, recite special blessings and commentaries, perform special rituals, and sing Passover songs. Easter will be observed Sun., Apr. 17. It is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. Christians refer to the week before Easter as Holy Week, which in Western Christianity contains the days of the Easter Triduum including Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Special Easter services will take place at area churches. Customs that have become associated with Easter and are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians include Easter parades, the Easter Bunny and egg hunting. Rye Brook Recreation has announced the following programs: Little League baseball for children in grades 2 through 7 (12 years of age and younger). The Port Chester Mobile Pantry will be at Drew Gardens, 10-22 Drew St., Sat., Apr. 9 at 1 p.m. The Pantry makes food more accessible in underserved neighborhoods where people may not be able to access food through traditional grocery stores or food pantries.
