Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is observed annually Nov. 11 to honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Port Chester and Blind Brook schools will be closed as will government offices in the Town of Rye and the villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook, the U.S. Post Office (no mail delivery) most banks and the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library. In Rye Brook there will be no garbage, recycling, bulk pickup Fri., Nov. 11. Friday collections move to Thursday; no green waste pickup this week. In Port Chester there is no change in collections this week.
The Veterans Day Ceremony will take place Sun., Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and North Regent Street, Port Chester. After the ceremony, everyone is invited to the Port Chester Post 93 American Legion Hall at 78 Pearl St. for food and beverages.
