Village receives $4 million state grant toward downtown sewer upgrades

With all their ducks in a row, the Village of Port Chester applied for and was one of the lucky winners of some of the $273 million in statewide water infrastructure grants through the NYS Environmental Facilities Committee. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the awards on Friday, Nov. 4.

Port Chester received just over $4 million toward is Downtown Sanitary Sewer Revitalization Project. This award represents 25% of the project costs of $16 million for Phase 1 of this plan which will replace and enlarge sanitary sewer capacity from Smith Street to Ryan Avenue.

“This funding will assist us to mobilize Phase 1 of what is to be the largest sanitary infrastructure improvement the village has ever undertaken,” said Village Manager Stuart Rabin. “Our Downtown Sanitary Sewer Revitalization Project will be transformative and help Port Chester meet the actual needs of our residents, lessen inflow and infiltration within our system, support future development and aid in our efforts to rehabilitate our coastline environment.”

Total construction costs of the sewer project will total nearly $35 million, and Port Chester can reapply for water infrastructure grants for all subsequent phases.
