Corn, beans, macaroni and cheese, cereal, vegetable oil, peas, potatoes, pasta—the fifth-graders at Ridge Street Elementary School had a hearty list of goods at hand as they packed dozens of bags with long-lasting food items last week which had been collected in a donation drive for Meals on Main Street (MOMS) in Port Chester.

The initiative was organized by Katherine Ayala, mother of fifth-grader Peter, who made fliers that were distributed to his peers and their families.

Each student was able to choose two items to bring in, according to fifth-grade teacher Tina Fernandez, and the classes were given daily reminders to encourage student participation in the drive. The students could also opt to donate $5 to help MOMS purchase turkeys, she said.

On Friday, Nov. 18, MOMS Program Development Manager Denise Cypher spoke with students at the school about the organization and its mission, then gave them a tour of the nonprofit’s distribution vehicles.

That day, which was also the day the drive culminated, the fifth-graders were able to pack about 40 bags for distribution and raise $145 (supplemented by the Blind Brook Parent Teacher Association) to purchase 16 turkeys for families in need. They also decorated the bags, Fernandez said, putting their own personal touches on care packages that could make a family’s holiday season brighter this year.
