Columbus Day/ Indigenous Peoples Day, a federal holiday, will be observed Mon., Oct. 10. Columbus Day is a national holiday that celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas Oct. 12, 1492. Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. On Oct. 8, 2021, President Biden became the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday by signing a presidential proclamation. Port Chester and Blind Brook schools will be closed as will government offices in the Town of Rye and the villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook; the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, most banks and the post office—no mail delivery. In Port Chester, there will be no change in the sanitation schedule this week. In Rye Brook, there will be no collections Mon. Mon. pickups move to Tues., Tues. pickups move to Wed.; Thurs. & Fri. collections are unchanged. No green waste pickups this week.

Port Chester Columbus Day Parade will take place on Sun., Oct. 9 along Westchester Avenue starting at Hawthorne Avenue in Rye Brook and ending in the New Broad Street parking lot. Parade begins at 2 p.m. An after parade celebration will take place immediately following the parade for participating groups at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 327 Westchester Ave., lower hall Exchange Place entrance. Rye Brook Recreation will present a Pumpkin Patch, Sat., Oct. 15 at Pine Ridge Park, Latonia Road, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Pumpkins available are $6-$10. Hot apple cider and donuts will be available for sale.
The Meals on Main Street Community Run, dubbed Miles for MOMS, will take place Sun., Oct. 16 at 8 a.m. beginning and ending at The Colony Grill, 35 Abendroth Ave., Port Chester. In addition to a 1.5-mile Fun Run, there will be a 5K race. Race festivities will include food, drinks and music at Colony Grill. Clay Art Center, 40 Beech St., Port Chester will hold their Annual Benefit & Auction, Hand-in-Hand, Sat., Oct. 15, 4-6 p.m. This is a tented outdoor event which will be held at CAC. Clay Art Center, 40 Beech St., Port Chester, will present “Winged Women” sculptures by CAC artist Susan Wortman, a Breast Cancer Awareness Month special event, with items available for purchase in the gallery and online thru Oct. 31. After a breast cancer diagnosis, Susan began this series of hand-built porcelain sculptures to heal from her cancer experience and adjust to a mastectomy with reconstruction. Representing health, strength and hope, the 50 sculptures of Susan’s Winged Women series reflect the diversity and beauty of our imperfect bodies. Fifty percent of the sale of each work will be donated to Cancer Support Team, a Westchester based non-profit that provides services to cancer patients and their families.
