Incumbent Democratic Mayor Luis Marino has no formal competition in his bid for a second two-year term on Mar. 21. The Republicans and Conservatives chose not to run a candidate, and no independent nominating petitions were submitted to the Westchester County Board of Elections to allow an individual to run on an independent line.

However, Marino can’t get away without a challenge of some sort, according to Trustee Bart Didden.

Didden announced on his Facebook page on Feb. 20 when asked why he didn’t have a sign on his lawn for Marino that he is waging a write-in campaign because “no one should run unopposed.”

He then made his campaign public at the Monday, Feb. 21 Board of Trustees meeting, noting that 12 years ago, Dennis Pilla was about to run unopposed, so he threw his hat into the ring.

In March 2011, he ran unsuccessfully against Pilla on the Republican and Independence lines when he had been a village trustee for less than a year.

Didden also considered a run for mayor again in 2015 on an independent line when Pilla and Trustee Gene Ceccarelli had been endorsed by the two major parties. However, he did not follow through.

Addressing Marino at the Feb. 21 meeting, Didden said: “While I support your candidacy, I am going to tell people to write in my name. Don’t worry, I’ll vote for you anyway.”

The League of Women Voters of Rye, Rye Brook & Port Chester will host and record a conversation with Mayor Marino on Mar. 9. The video will be available the following day on YouTube, at www.lwvryerbpc.org and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LWVRRBPC
