The Port Chester Youth Baseball League (PCYBL) 12U age group Pirates warmed up for the upcoming Greater Hudson Valley Baseball League (GHVBL) playoffs by closing out the regular season by winning four of their last five games in the past week.
They won games at home beating Old Greenwich 5-2 last Tuesday (7/18), swept a doubleheader slugfest against Eastchester Saturday (7-6, 11-8) and edged Hastings 9-8 Sunday (7/23) with the lone loss coming away against the Ardsley Heat Blue D3 team last Thursday (7/20).
"We had solid pitching through all four wins by John Halliday, Tyler Hastings, Joey Szygiel, Evin Eski, Joe Bologna in our four wins," said coach Brian McConnell. "And we had an outstanding overall performance by Sophia Faraci during the doubleheader."
But the Ardsley loss was one of those games best remembered as forgotten because it was one of those days when everything went wrong.
Overall, however, McConnell likes the way the Pirates have been playing going into the playoffs with the schedule to be announced Tuesday (8/1).
McConnell sees the Pirates rounding into form with what he calls "solid defense all around in the wins paired with timely hitting and aggressive base running par for the course for this ever-improving team."
He is counting on various players stepping up in the playoffs as they have throughout the regular summer season. The roster depth indicates potential star turns from talented players like Jay DiLeo, Aiden Rosa, Evan Eski, Ty Frimere and Jonathan Smith.
"I'm really looking to end the season on a high note with a deep run into the playoffs," McConnell said. And so are the 12U Pirates.
