Salvatore and Rose Ann Sabia of Port Chester celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Apr. 26. Both Sal and Rose Ann are natives of Port Chester and have lived here all their lives. In addition to their four children, Anthony Sabia, Jody Ann Pongratz, Mary Ann Sabia and Steven Sabia, their seven grandchildren gathered to celebrate the occasion at Rafele in Rye. Not only did Rose Ann and Sal have members of their bridal party in attendance, but they surprised their guests by dancing again to “I’ll Be Loving You Always,” the first dance song at their wedding in 1953.

With the “feels like” temperature expected to be over 100 degrees for the next few days, Westchester County Parks’ pools and beaches will stay open one hour longer through Sat., July 29, due to the heatwave.
Saxon Woods in White Plains, Sprain Ridge in Yonkers, The Brook at Tibbetts in Yonkers and Willson’s Waves in Mount Vernon, as well as Croton Point Beach in Croton-on-Hudson and Glen Island Beach in New Rochelle will remain open until 7:30 p.m. with no admittance after 7 p.m. The extra hour is weather-permitting, as storms are expected intermittently over the next few days.
Proof of Westchester County residency is required at all four pools and Glen Island Beach. Admission fees apply; parking fees apply at The Brook at Tibbetts, Croton Point and Glen Island beaches.
Aliza Kibel and Mitchell Saunders, both of Rye Brook, and Sara Velasquez of Port Chester have been named to the Dean’s List at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. for the Spring 2023 semester. To qualify for Dean’s List, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or greater.
Julianna Defeo, Michell Fajardo and Udeagha Udeagha, all of Port Chester, received degrees this spring from the University at Albany. Julianna received a BS in Chemistry, magna cum laude; Michell received a BS in Biology, magna cum laude; and Udeagha received a BS in Human Biology.

Students who have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and taken a minimum of 12 credits are named to the Dean’s List. For BA and BS programs, a semester GPS of 3.50 is required. For BFA and MusB programs a semester GPA of 3.75 is required.

Alyssa is majoring in Inclusive Education Childhood; Alondra is majoring in Political Science, Ashley is majoring in Social Philosophy, Jordan is majoring in Communication Studies, Tania is majoring in Biology, Christopher is majoring in Adolescence Educ-Math and Jacquelyn is majoring in Psychology. The Dean's List is the highest ranking for undergraduate students in their respective academic areas of the university. Students must earn a minimum 3.3 grade point average for the semester to make the list.

The next Port Chester High School Marching Band bottle and can recycling collection will be Sun., Aug. 6, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Middle School parking lot on Bowman Avenue, Rye Brook. The Westport Country Playhouse has named director, playwright and actor Mark Shanahan as the incoming artistic director for the 2024-25 season. He is currently serving as curator of the Playhouse’s Script in Hand playreading series and will succeed Mark Lamos in March 2024. Shanahan has directed at stages around the country; as an actor he has appeared on and off-Broadway and is also the creator and curator of the WCP Radio Theater.
The NYS Office of Children & Family Services is offering $800 million in grants to support the childcare workforce. Programs will be able to apply for recruitment funds and staff bonuses which will range from $2,300-$3,000 for all eligible employees before payroll taxes. The Salvation Army in Port Chester is holding a drive for school supplies in advance of the beginning of the school year for distribution to children in need in Port Chester, Rye Brook and Rye. The following items are requested: spiral notebooks, composition books, backpacks (new), Casio FX-55 Plus calculators, dividers, index cards, 3x5”, retractable ballpoint pens, highlighters, construction paper, pencils, colored pencils, washable markers, glue sticks and crayons (box of 24). The items can be left in a box in the driveway at 48 Meadowlark Rd., Rye Brook. Items will be collected thru Aug. 28.
The NYS DMV is undertaking a summer-long underage drinking crackdown on the use of fake IDs to purchase alcohol at concert venues statewide. It will continue thru Sept. 17.
At Congregation KTI it is a Mitzvah (good deed) moment for all to help feed those in the community who are needy. All food collected in KTI’s ongoing drive is being given to the Salvation Army in Port Chester. Food requested includes cans of tuna, chicken, vegetables, beans and fruit as well as pasta, 10-16-ounce bags/boxes of white rice, snacks, shelf-stable milk, healthy cereals, macaroni and cheese and canned meals like Chef-Boy-r-Dee, chili, etc. The food can be left in bins in Leslie Brandeis Novack's driveway at 48 Meadowlark Rd., Rye Brook.
