Veterans Day is Sat., Nov. 11, but the federal holiday honoring military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces will be observed Fri., Nov. 10. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Villages of Rye Brook and Port Chester will be closed Fri., Nov. 10 as will the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, Blind Brook and Port Chester schools and the Rye Brook and Port Chester senior centers. Most banks and the post office will be closed Sat., Nov. 11, and there will be no mail delivery that day. The library will be open Sat., Nov. 11. In Port Chester, there will be no garbage or recycling collections Friday, Nov. 10 and no bulk or green waste collection this week. In Rye Brook, there will be no sanitation collections Fri., Nov. 10 and no green waste collections this week.
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held Sat., Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, Westchester Avenue and N. Regent St., Port Chester. All local and county officials have been invited to participate.
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, will be observed Nov. 10-15, with the main day considered to be Sun., Nov. 12. It symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. During the festival, the celebrants illuminate their homes, temples and workspaces with oil lamps, candles and lanterns.
Bands Together for Vets Tunnel to Tower Fundraiser will be hosted by Joey’s Sports Bar & Grill, 583 Willett Ave., Port Chester, Fri. & Sat., Nov. 10 & 11, 5 p.m.-midnight in support of veterans and first responders.
