The Blind Brook boys’ varsity soccer team went into the week of Sept. 17-23 with a record of 2-1, knowing they had two huge games ahead of them. On the cold night of Tuesday, Sept. 19, the boys traveled to Valhalla to play under the lights at 6 p.m. in front of a loud Vikings crowd.
The Vikings got an early goal to break the score and take a 1-0 lead. Just minutes later, junior Danny Wilk scored off a beautiful corner kick taken by Nico Palacios to tie the game. The game stayed even for the rest of the first half, and both teams had some decent chances to break the tie but were not able to get it done. Blind Brook went into the second half unsatisfied and hungry for more.
The Trojans brought a different intensity onto the field for the second half. They were coming up big with many chances and putting pressure on the Viking defense. Seventeen minutes into the second half and at minute 57 of the game, senior captain Martin Otero gave a great ball to Palacios, who finished on a header from around 25 yards out. This electric play from the boys gave them the 2-1 lead and more energy to finish the Vikings off in the last 23 minutes.
The Vikings very soon responded and tied it at two, making it a very close game. Just a few minutes later, in minute 63, with 17 minutes left, Otero put another ball into the middle where again Palacios was there to finish it off and make it a 3-2 lead late in the game.
The Trojans kept control of the game until just minutes later, the Vikings were given a penalty kick. Junior goalkeeper Luka Cuk was the only one standing between Valhalla and the game-tying goal to force overtime. Cuk stood tall and made a diving save to his right side to save the game and win the night for the Trojans, advancing their record to 3-1. The boys mobbed Cuk and took the win back to Blind Brook, where they would have a practice day before getting right back to it on Thursday, Sept. 21 when they hosted Rye Neck.
Rye Neck came into town hoping to spoil the streak of Blind Brook.
Four minutes into the game, it was Palacios again who nailed the right corner of the net from far out, again giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead off another dime from captain Otero. It stayed mostly even the rest of the game, good chances from both sides. For the 76 minutes of soccer played after the Blind Brook goal, nothing happened. Cuk had another huge game in goal and was a big reason for the defensive lockdown of Rye Neck. The Trojans walked away after a complete game shutout by Cuk with a 1-0 win.
With this victory, the boys secured the #3 seed in the section and go into the week of Sept. 24-30 with a 4-1 record and much confidence. However, they have one of the most important weeks of the season and face lots of adversity this coming week. They host Pleasantville High School on Tuesday, Sept. 26 followed by an away game at Westlake High School the next day, and the day after that they travel to Tuckahoe. The Trojans get a quick rest day on Friday, Sept. 29 before their homecoming game on the 30th against the Scarsdale B Team in front of the biggest crowd of the season at 7:30 p.m.
