In the galaxy of high school sports superstars, some shine more brightly than others—and Port Chester and Blind Brook players rank right up there with the best of the best glitterati in Westchester and the Lower Hudson Valley.
Seven local ballers were named to the Lohud players to watch list as the best in Westchester and the Lower Hudson Valley.
The star-studded group
That elite group included Port Chester's three versatile baseball aces: Junior pitcher/outfielder Jordany German, shortstop/pitcher Bryan Sachs and senior pitcher/first baseman Josh Virella, perhaps the Rams’ best hitter and one of the few to homer over the distant left centerfield fence.
The Blind Brook Trojans cracked that star-studded list with ace senior pitcher/shortstop Andrew (The Arm) Rogovic and junior first baseman/pitcher Dean Repaci.
The Lady Trojans softball players who made the Lohud watch list include sophomore supernovas Charlotte Florin, a third baseman/centerfielder, and shortstop Isabella Montesano.
The 'Nine Who Shine'
Out of that watch list, Lohud came up with a "Nine Who Shine" All-Star early baseball season lineup with Rogovic the only local player to make that starting lineup based on his outstanding track record last season as the only Blind Brook/Port Chester baseball player to sign an ultra-competitive Division One athletic scholarship commitment with pitcher-friendly Northeastern.
He has the most glittering resume of any of the local players after winning numerous awards last year including being named the League and All-Conference Player of the Year, making the All-League and All-Section teams after going 5-1 on the season with a 1.07 earned run average while leading Section 1 with 82 strikeouts. That number included overpowering games where he struck out 19 and 14 of 21 batters while leading the Trojans deep into the playoffs after winning the League championship.
The Ram pitching ace
German, the pitcher who struck out 18 batters and allowed just one hit in a recent Ram win over Roosevelt, was named to the short "Best of the Rest" list of near misses for that "Nine Who Shine" Lohud team. He is rated one of the top 25 pitchers in Westchester, right up there with Tyler Renz of Fox Lane, the 6:4 flame thrower out of Mount Kisco who is headed for St. John's University on an athletic scholarship, and the highly sought-after Rogovic.
German, a smaller, more compact version of Renz and Rogovic, is being scouted but has yet to commit anywhere.
With the season newly underway, it will be interesting to see which of the early season Lohud watch list All-Star picks are the standouts when the season comes to an end.
