Labor Day, a federal holiday in the U.S., will be celebrated Mon., Sept. 2 to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook will be closed as will most banks, the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, the post office (no mail delivery) and the Port Chester and Rye Brook Senior Centers. In Port Chester, Mon. garbage will be collected Tues., Tues. collections move to Wed.; the rest of the week is unchanged. No bulk or green waster collections this week. Port Chester and Blind Brook schools will open for the 2024-25 school year Tues., Sept. 3.
A Village of Port Chester Blood Drive in memory of Officer Christopher Bernal will be held Wed., Sept. 4, 12-4:30 p.m. at the Senior Community Center, 220 Grace Church St. To schedule an appointment, go to RedCrossBlood.org and use the sponsor code Port Chester. Blood donors will receive an exclusive Red Cross raglan shirt while supplies last.
A Family Fun & Pet Extravaganza will be held Sat., Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Abendroth Park, 139 Touraine Ave., Port Chester. Rain or shine. This free event presented by the Village of Port Chester and the SPCA of Westchester will include pet adoption, crafts, vendors, food trucks and the Bubble Bus. Dogs on leashes will be welcome.

The program will be held Mon., Tues. & Wed. as follows: Mon.: Create a Creature: Kinderart for children in grades 1-6. Children will create their own creature in a variety of media including clay and fabric. Tues.: Fun Sketch: Broadway Magic for children in grades K-6. Class will introduce young performers to the world of musical theater and the magic of Broadway. Wed.: World of Art: Triple Threat—Song, Art, Dance for children in grades 1-6.
