Christmas, Wed., Dec. 25 is a national holiday and for children, the wait for Santa’s deliveries are almost over. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook will be closed as will the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, banks, the Port Chester and Rye Brook Senior Centers and the post office; no mail delivery. The Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library will be open 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Tues., Dec. 24 & 31. Village of Port Chester government offices will close at 1 p.m. Tues., Dec. 24. In Port Chester, there will be no bulk pickup on Wed., Dec. 25. The week’s garbage and recycling collections are unchanged. In Rye Brook, Wed. collections move to Thurs.; the rest of the week’s garbage and recycling collections are unchanged; no green waste collection this week. Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, will begin at sundown Wed., Dec. 25. Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday marking the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after the Macabeean revolt of the second century B.C.E. when the oil in the temple that was supposed to burn for one night, burned for eight nights. The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each of the festival's eight nights. Children are generally given a gift each night of the festival and traditional foods made with oil to symbolize the oil in the ancient temple include latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts. Happy Hanukkah to our readers who celebrate this holiday.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture observed from Thurs., Dec. 26-Wed., Jan. 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the 6th day. Kwanzaa celebrates the importance of the pan-African family and corresponding social values. Happy Kwanzaa to our readers who celebrate this holiday.

A Menorah Lighting ceremony will be held Thurs., Dec. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard of ULTA Beauty in the Gateway Shopping Center, 421 Boston Post Rd., Port Chester. Rabbi Ben Goldberg of Congregation K.T.I. will light the menorah.
