Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, will begin at sundown Wed., Dec. 25. Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday marking the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after the Macabeean revolt of the second century B.C.E. when the oil in the temple that was supposed to burn for one night, burned for eight nights. The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each of the festival's eight nights. Children are generally given a gift each night of the festival and traditional foods made with oil to symbolize the oil in the ancient temple include latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts. Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture observed from Thurs., Dec. 26-Wed., Jan. 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the 6th day.
