Letter: Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library: More than books and videos
July 3, 2024 at 10:33 p.m.
You may have read about the growing popularity of a Library of Things. This generally means that your local library has other items to lend out besides books and videos. This could include items such as metal detectors and garden tool sets. The Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library does not currently have a large collection of materials in its own Library of Things, but what it does have is still impressive.
Items to borrow with a valid library card include Chromebooks, which can be borrowed for three weeks; Launchpad tablets, kid-friendly tablets that include storybooks, videos, and games that help children learn to read with no Wi-Fi required; Wonderbooks, print books with a ready-to-play audiobook inside and children can press play to read along with the story or switch to learning mode for literacy learning and fun and Yoto Players, screen-free audio players that let kids explore stories, music and learning by inserting a specially marked card into the device. (Yoto Players can only be borrowed for use in the library.)
Perhaps the best items from the Library of Things are passes to local museums. These include passes to the Bruce Museum, the Children's Museum of Manhattan, the Empire Pass, FDR Presidential Library and Museum, the Greenburgh Nature Center, the Greenwich Historical Society, the Intrepid Museum, the Neuberger Museum of Art, the New York Transit Museum, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Stepping Stones Museum for Children, and the Westchester Children's Museum. Learn how to borrow these museum passes at the library or call 914/939-6710 Ext. 103.
I hope you and your family enjoy borrowing from the library’s Library of Things.
