Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the U.S. and will be celebrated Wed., June 19. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the U.S. and was first recognized in 2021. Government offices in the Town of Rye and the Village of Port Chester and Rye Brook will be closed as will Port Chester and Blind Brook Schools, most banks, the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, the Port Chester and Rye Brook Senior Centers and the post office; there will be no mail delivery. In Rye Brook there will be no change in the sanitation schedule this week. In Port Chester garbage & recycling collections are unchanged; however, there will be no bulk or green waste collection June 19.
The Port Chester Historical Society will host a Juneteenth Celebration near the Bush-Lyon Homestead in Lyon Park, 479 King St., Wed., June 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. All are invited and encouraged to attend this family-friendly event that will feature snacks and cake, music, speeches, displays and interactive crafts for kids. Westchester County Poet Laureate Phylisha Villanueva will perform a poem of her own, and there will be poetry from a Port Chester High School student from the Slam Poetry Club. Through funding from ArtsWestchester, the Historical Society has been able to commission paintings and drawings based on records of slavery they have, and attendees will be able to talk to the artists themselves. A National Independence Day Juneteenth ceremony hosted by the Town of Rye and The Osborn will be held Sat., June 22, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the African American Cemetery, 215 North St., Rye. The ceremony will be followed by a Volunteer Service Project at the Cemetery.
