The Blind Brook girls’ varsity soccer team wrapped up a rollercoaster week with two competitive games. Battling through some challenging moments, the Trojans were determined to keep their opponents at bay.
The team came out with a hard-fought win against Westlake on Thursday, Oct. 10 as well as a tie in their game on Tuesday, Oct. 15 against Briarcliff. Although the results were mixed, the Trojans demonstrated teamwork and an urge to show strength. Their record now stands at 9-3-1.
The week consisted of a 3-2 victory over Westlake and a 1-1 draw with Briarcliff. The first game ended on a high note as the girls secured a crucial victory against another determined opponent.
The team dominated possession early on, and their attacking mindset paid off. In the second half, the girls came out stronger, creating a lead with a well-placed shot from senior captain Natalie Carey. However, the varsity girls didn’t lose focus. Rallying under the leadership of their captains, they quickly regained control of the game.
Sophomore Lola Gonzalez and freshman Gabby Cavallo added a goal apiece to the scoreboard which contributed to their team’s win. The victory highlighted their defensive stability and the team's overall chemistry, as well as many growing contributions from different players on the field.
Coming off the victory, the team faced a different type of challenge in their next match against Briarcliff on Oct. 15. The game was a duel to determine which team had better soccer IQ physically and mentally. A back-and-forth contest tested the Trojans’ endurance and mental toughness.
Early in the game, the girls fell behind, lacking their first touches on the ball and some defensive miscommunication. That led to an early goal for the opposing team from a penalty kick that tested the Trojans’ capability and later resulted in a well-earned goal. Instead of letting the game slip away, the girls dug deep, tightening their defense and looking for opportunities to counter.
Their resilience paid off within the first half when sophomore Lola Gonzalez sent a perfect through ball to junior Kendall Konigsberg who shot it past the goalkeeper to tie the game.
Both teams continued to push for a winning goal, but the defenses held strong on both sides, and the game ended in a draw. Goalkeeper Bella Montesano made four saves for Blind Brook.
While the weeks’ results were a mix of emotions for the team following a thrilling win and a hard-earned tie, they are taking away many valuable lessons.
Head coach Brian Sullivan emphasized the importance of consistency and staying mentally focused through tough stretches which allowed the players to reflect on themselves and their skills.
The Trojans would then turn their attention to the matches on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at home against Rye Neck and Friday, Oct. 18 at Pleasantville, hoping to build on this week’s performances while defining their strategy and execution in their games. They will play their final game of the regular season on Monday, Oct. 21 against Westlake at home. All matches start at 4:30 p.m.
As the season draws to a close, this past week will serve as a reminder that success in soccer is not always about the scoreboard but about each player's grit, teamwork, and determination to keep improving their personal game.
