Letter: Dr. Flisser on why she’s running for Congress

October 23, 2024 at 10:01 p.m.

When Westchester residents approached me and asked that I run for Congress, I was deeply moved by their request. Working as a local physician for decades, I was aware of their concerns about the deterioration of our quality of life and the failure of our current government to protect us against safety issues, home zoning destruction, an open border, and economic deterioration.

Born in Europe, I was smuggled out by my parents, hidden under a mail truck, and spent two years in a Displaced Persons camp before being brought to America aboard a US Marine troop ship. I am deeply grateful for my education in the Bronx, where I studied from elementary school through medical school, and am a lifelong volunteer at our local hospitals. I am currently a volunteer for FEMA as well.

My experience in government includes serving as the mayor, as well as Fire Commissioner and Police Commissioner of Scarsdale; where I established flood control improvements, water quality preservation, and most importantly, single-family zoning rescue when we prevented the construction of a giant building over our train tracks. As the Medical Director of the Bronxville School District, I was successful, with the cooperation of parents and staff, in keeping our schools open during COVID, including our BOCES program, which provides services to children with special needs from all of Westchester County. We remained open, even during the summers.

I am a pediatrician, not a politician. Washington has lost touch with the fundamental needs of our families. I believe strongly in our Founders’ concerns about a permanent, entrenched political structure and its lack of contact with our people. Their plans now are bringing undocumented arrivals into Westchester, erecting congested, high-rise vote reservoirs in our neighborhoods, and destroying forever the American Dream.

Miriam Levitt Flisser, MD

Scarsdale
