The fall season of Blind Brook athletics officially began on Monday, Aug. 26, with day 1 of what was a week full of competition. For the Blind Brook boys’ varsity soccer team, however, these five days of tryouts was the third consecutive week with the team back together. The boys met the previous two weeks for open sessions and pre-season camps, both run by new head coach Lewys Jones. Possession drills, two-on-twos, and running exercises and tests have been just a small part of the preparation process for the 2024 Trojan boys’ squad.

The upcoming season brings many new additions to the team, including players, coaching staff, and most importantly a home field. The district spent the summer working on the brand new turf for Blind Brook soccer, football, and lacrosse to take place on. The boys were finally able to take their new field after the ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Aug. 20. All Blind Brook athletes were excited to test out the field, as was Athletic Director Kim Saxton, who indicated excitement for the “incredible achievements that will unfold on this field.”

The Trojans have unfinished business dating back to last year after their second-round defeat to the Briarcliff Bears by a 3-0 score. The now-senior captains Dylan McRedmond, QuiQue Almeida, Nico Palacios and Luka Cuk have all been members of the varsity team since their sophomore year, and they have learned important aspects of leadership from past captains and seniors.

“Throughout my high school soccer career, I have had the privilege of playing with many amazing captains,” McRedmond said. “Even though they all had different styles of leadership, one common trait that stood out in each of them was their desire for each player on the team to perform at the best they can. They knew if every person on the team played at their best, the team would have the best chance to succeed. With our season starting soon, I will have this mindset in my head every time we step out on the field as a team. I want each player to succeed, as an individual and a teammate.”

With the new varsity squad featuring three freshmen, leadership and mentorship are huge factors that will help set up future generations of Blind Brook soccer.

The Trojans would practice three more times before starting their 2024 season at Putnam Valley on Friday, Sept. 6. They travel to Quaker Ridge Elementary School in Scarsdale on Monday, Sept. 9 to face Scarsdale-B before opening their home schedule on the 11th hosting Harrison, with Hastings two days later on Friday the 13th. All games start at 4:30 p.m.
