Wait! Before jumping into fall cleanup, think twice before cutting a coneflower. In your backyard you might have beautiful coneflowers that bloom in the summer months. Once fall rolls around, they might start to appear dry and frail. Although you may be tempted to cut them down, they continue to serve as a food source for many gorgeous birds such as the American Goldfinch pictured in the accompanying photo. Cardinals, finches, blue jays and other birds rely on plants like this in order to survive during the fall and winter months. So, during your fall cleanup this year, consider leaving the coneflowers and helping the birds.
