The Blind Brook girls’ varsity tennis team has started its season 3-0 in league play—the best start for the team in recent years.
Senior captain Ella Mensch said, “This is such a great team with an incredible coach (third year coach Todd Bazzini), and we’re really excited to have started the season so strong.”
The team won their first match at home against Leffell on Sept. 5 with big wins from first doubles team senior Madilyn Klein and junior Mara Baltag (7-5, 6-4), second doubles team juniors Maddie Fishbach and Abigail Weintraub (6-1, 6-0), and third doubles team juniors Avery Smith and Mallory Schwartz (6-3, 6-0).
The girls then had a tough out of league match at Ardsley but came back strong with an exciting victory away versus Keio Academy, where the entire match came down to a tiebreaker with Klein and Fishbach coming out on top. Klein said, “It was such an intense match, but I’m so happy we were able to secure the win for the team.” Freshman Julia Mensch and senior Mikayla Dolgins also easily won their fourth doubles match (8-3).
The team finished out last week with a sweep of Croton-on-Hudson, with Ella Mensch winning decisively 6-0, 6-1 at first singles and junior Mia Fishkind following suit with 6-1, 6-2 at second singles. Each of the doubles teams played strong matches to secure the win, including sophomores Sara Levine and Avery Smith at second doubles (8-1).
Coach Bazzini said of the team, “I am so proud of these girls this season. This team has really come together in a short period of time, and I feel we could have a few more wins in our future if we stay focused and confident.”
Next up the girls would take on Briarcliff at home Wednesday, Sept. 18, followed by an away match at Pleasantville on Friday, Sept. 20, followed by Rye Neck at home on Monday, Sept. 23 and The Leffell School away on Wednesday, Sept. 25. All games start at 4:30 p.m.
