Honor Flight
May 21, 2015 at 8:25 p.m.
At Westchester County Airport, Civil Air Patrol 2nd Lt. Anthony Alfano fixes the cap on his niece, Cadet Airman Autumn-Lynne Aarons.
Cadet 1st Lt. Connor Winton stands at the front of the lineup of his fellow members of the South Eastern Group, a New York wing of the Civil Air Patrol. They acted as the honor guard at the send-off ceremony for 65 local World War II veterans who travelled to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial and other sites on Saturday, May 9, courtesy of Hudson Valley Honor Flight.
Ridge Street School first graders from Linda Greco's class wave flags. The students in Greco's class made books to be presented to each veteran who went on the flight, including Maddie Fishbach's great-grandfather.
Two local veterans scheduled to go on a flight to Washington, D.C. to see the various war memorials on Saturday, May 9 were not able to make it, one due to illness and the other because he died. In their honor, pictures of them in uniform, as well as two flags flown over the United States Capitol, made the journey in their place. From left: Civil Air Patrol Cadet Lt. Col. Richard Ware, Cadet Capt. Lea Nora Ware, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Michael Kali and Cadet Capt. Briana Ross.
The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester lead the way into the airport hangar for the buses full of veterans ready to fly to Washington, D.C.
Maddie Fishbach presents a book she and her fellow Ridge Street School first graders made for her great-grandfather and the other veterans.
