Educating students about our country’s heroes

<p class="Picture">Sisters Jennifer Cammarotta and Joanne Cammarota Vinci pose with a photo of their deceased father, Joseph “Red” Cammarota. A short biography of him is found in one of the almost 100 books donated to Park Avenue School by retired Port Chester Middle School teachers Hank and Isabelle Birdsall. </p>
<p class="Picture">King Street resident and veteran Joseph Tondreau served in the military and was stationed on the Berlin Wall in Germany during the Vietnam War. He proudly wears an American flag pin and has his hand over his heart during teacher Anthony Sabia’s rendition of “Taps.”</p>
<p class="Picture">Port Chester veterans are asked to stand to be acknowledged. They later received little medals and trophies from their kids and family members. </p>
<p class="Picture"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Principal Rosa Taylor opened the ceremony at Park Avenue School on the morning of Thursday, Nov. 10. by saying “It doesn’t take a hero to send men into battle; it takes a hero to go into battle…We stand in the midst of patriots and those who have served.” She gestured to the pictures behind her of veterans, alive and deceased, from Port Chester and said their pictures will be hanging in the school for her students to learn from. </span></p> <p class="Byline">Photo Story By Casey Watts</p>
