Rye Brook Cub Scouts take to docks to learn about Coast Guard Auxiliary
October 12, 2017 at 4:58 a.m.
The Nathan Bruckenthal, a boat built in Massachusetts in 1978 for the Coast Guard, now resides in Port Chester. Its normal capacity is four auxiliary Coast Guardsmen, but it was filled to the brim with parents and Cub Scouts on Saturday, Oct. 7.
The Cub Scouts and parents check out one of the two ship engines.
Coast Guard Auxiliary Lieutenant Mike Reidy shows Rye Brook Cub Scouts the equipment he commonly uses, such as life vests with reflectors.
Valley Terrace resident Arvin Kovoor, 7, is nothing but smiles as he steps onto the Coast Guard Auxiliary boat.
The early bird gets the worm, or in this case, the captain’s chair. Eight-year-old Will Boyd of Mohegan Lane was the first of the older kids in Pack 3 to make it onto the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s boat on Saturday, Oct. 7. The boat is docked in Port Chester behind Waterfront Place and the Rye Brook Cub Scouts took full advantage of this learning opportunity.
