As attendees in the gymnasium stand, Mike Miceli plays “Taps” on the trumpet during the Park Avenue Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9. Prior to the event, the Port Chester High School Band director also played “Taps” at the King Street Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony.
One of several speakers at King Street School, William Villanova specifically urges the room to remember and honor the female veterans who serve the U.S. “We must never forget the women veterans and how they shaped our future,” he said, before reciting the poem “Invisible Soldier” by Sarge Lintecum.
After King Street School kindergartener Savannah Gimenez runs across the stage of veterans to give her father, Christian, a yellow rose, he kneels down and gives her a big kiss on the cheek in return.
Silvio Buccieri, a lifelong Port Chester resident who served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany after World War II, places his hand on his heart and sings along with the National Anthem during the Park Avenue School ceremony.
The Park Avenue School ceremony was facilitated by the entire fifth-grade class for their service learning project to help the community. To honor veterans, Briseyda Lucas sings “My Country ’Tis of Thee” with the rest of Veronica Sanguino’s fifth-grade class.

Preparing to participate in the rose giving ceremony at King Street School, first-grader Aidan Brenzel and fifth-grader Maia Scher sit in the auditorium aisle and listen to speakers.
As Park Avenue School students sit in a single file to listen to speakers, first-grader Juan Molina briefly breaks formation to smile for the camera.
Park Avenue fourth-grader Dominick Luzzi and his third-grade sister Julianna examine photographs and profiles of veterans on a hallway wall. The collage consists of family members of teachers and staff at Park Avenue School.
