Enjoying fresh air on the way to school
October 11, 2018 at 7:07 a.m.
Crossing guard and Rye Brook resident Linda Kochanowicz holds her stop sign high at the Rockinghorse Trail and North Ridge Street intersection to help more than a dozen kids and parents get to Ridge Street Elementary School safely during International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
While holding hands with her father Scott, kindergartner Eleanor Pohlman flashes a coy smile on her way to school. The duo is joined by 450 other students and their families participating in the international walking day.
Though Julia Garofolo, 8, chose to walk, her little sister Isabella, 4, decided to take the wheels. To help his daughters, Windingwood Road resident John Garofolo joins and carries Julia’s backpack while steering Isabella’s bike.
Students eagerly gather around a table greeting them at the school’s entrance to proudly sign their names on a poster after completing their morning walk.
Second-grade buddies Sebastian Candee (left) and Zach Capon pick out the perfect spot to sign their names together.
Walk to School Day promotes fitness, and dogs enjoy physical activity, too! Fourth-grader Ella and her mom Robin Hoberman pose for a picture with their rambunctious mini goldendoodle Rocky after walking all the way from Little Kings Lane.
