Being good neighbors: Capitol Theatre staff celebrates Earth Day by cleaning up the surrounding area
April 25, 2019 at 8:41 a.m.
In the drizzling rain, Stamford, Conn. resident Stefanie May gleefully clutches a large black garbage bag as she searches for trash on Broad Street. The Capitol Theatre marketing director organized an Earth Day Clean-Up on Saturday, Apr. 20, to encourage venue staff and fans to help give back to the community.
Magda Mariak, a North Pearl Street resident, scours Westchester Avenue by picking up every cigarette butt in sight. “The Capitol brings so much to this community. But it’s not just a music venue, it’s part of the community,” the 33-year-old said. “It can get crazy around here during shows and we want to give back to our neighbors.”
Sue and Dave Harmon sweep out dead leaves from a trench by the parking lot at the corner of Westchester Avenue and New Broad Street before moving on to the pavement itself. The Pleasantville couple are volunteering with around five other Squirrel Squad members, the Capitol Theatre’s street-promotions team.
