Grinding for a skate park
June 27, 2019 at 8:06 a.m.
Ready to go in his protective padding and helmet, 12-year-old Daniel Martello practices ways to get started on the halfpipe inside a private skate park on Wilkins Avenue on Saturday, June 22. The rising Port Chester Middle School seventh-grader is one of dozens who spent the afternoon skating at a fundraising event organized by Port Chester Police Officer Ken Manning in his efforts to bring a Port Chester Skate Park to the Village.
Glen Avenue resident Wyatt Zuk, 22, gets air as he does skateboarding tricks with several other experienced skaters on the more complex rink in the private park.
With the street blocked off in front of the skate park, Wilkins Avenue makes a great canvas. Lia Manning, the 4-year-old daughter of Port Chester Police Officer Ken Manning, who envisioned the idea of a Port Chester Skate Park, shows off her creative mind with a piece of blue chalk.
Spectators gather outside the Wilkins Avenue indoor private park to watch local skateboarders glide back and forth and competitively support each other while they try to master different tricks.
