King Street School tradition appreciates local veterans
November 14, 2019 at 6:13 a.m.
U.S. Navy veteran Kenneth Sunderland kindly embraces his neighbor Wessel Aarts, a King Street School third grader, on stage in the elementary school’s auditorium. Aarts and his second-grade brother Jacco (left) presented Sunderland with a rose during the school’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8.
Proudly saluting, King Street School students involved with the Boy Scouts of America kick off the ceremony by leading the crowded auditorium in the Pledge of Allegiance. From the left: fourth-grader Sophia Faraci, fourth-grader Evin Eski and third-grader Santo Giordano.
As the audience stands in honor of the soldiers, Port Chester High School Band Director Mike Miceli plays a patriotic tune on the trumpet.
King Street School second-grader Nicholas Allmashy sits among his peers, immersed by the ceremony speakers before going on stage to give a rose to a soldier.
Representing Gov. Andrew Cuomo, special guest speaker William Smith, a New York State Division of Veterans’ Services advisor, gives a passionate speech about the comradery of service before encouraging the veterans on stage to take advantage of the benefits offered by the state.
King Street School fourth-grader Jonah Helmle gives his father Carl a hug during the rose giving ceremony at the end of the celebration. Carl’s other son Evan, a second grader, patiently waits for his turn.
Celebrating his last year as a King Street Veterans Day organizer, William Villanova enjoys the traditional after ceremony breakfast with his fifth-grade son Nicholas.
