Preparing for turkey day
November 25, 2021 at 3:45 a.m.
Dozens of people line up at the new Meals on Main Street food mobile in the St. Peter’s Church parking lot to collect free turkeys and various other produce and canned goods for Thanksgiving on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The organization held three distribution days leading up to the holiday with food they were able to secure after raising money through a fun run fundraiser in October.
Meals on Main Street volunteer Vicky Martinez, who resides near Midland Avenue, puts together a box of onions to stock up one of the grocery aisle-style shelves on the truck.
Nicole Gibbs (right), a Rye resident who sits on the Meals on Main Street Board of Directors, helps Port Chester resident Grace Young secure a turkey in her cart. In the week before the holiday, the organization distributed around 500 turkeys obtained through fundraising and donations.
Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without dessert. Irving Avenue resident Helen Nelson is happy to accept a free pie to top off her fresh groceries.
