Talking turkey on Midland
November 25, 2021 at 4:17 a.m.
Chris Johnson of Drew Street accepts a turkey from Kate Howard, co-founder of The Giver’s Hand, in front of the long-closed Key Food supermarket on Midland Avenue on Saturday, Nov. 21. This is the second year the non-profit, formed in 2018, gave away turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving in Port Chester. They had 150 birds to distribute which had been donated by Costco in Port Chester and Wegmans in Harrison.
Francisca Arita of 29 Midland Ave. picks up bagels from The Giver’s Hand volunteer Vera Wethington, a longtime Rye Brook resident who now lives in Greenwich. They were also donated by Costco.
Kate Howard plops a fresh Butterball into Jennifer Arbusto’s bright yellow bag. Arbusto lives on Weber Drive.
Latecomer Rosa Guallasaca of Port Chester gives her name and contact information to volunteer Vera Wethington before receiving a turkey.
Kate Knowles Howard, who grew up in Port Chester, and her husband Kayode Howard, originally from Mt. Vernon, founded The Giver’s Hand. During the pandemic, they started to see the need in the community with people out of work and organized this Thanksgiving-themed distribution. While last year it was a drive-by giveaway, this year people lined up on the sidewalk. The Howards, who now live in Stamford, plan to make it an annual event.
Lynn Luzzi of Quintard Drive was among the first in line at the turkey giveaway.
